Glossary

Aqua (water):

water in Latin, is the word used in the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) to label this vital element. Water is primarily used in practically all cosmetics and personal care products to dissolve (solvent) many of the ingredients that impart skin benefits known as actives. It also forms emulsions where the oil and water components of the formula are combined to produce creams and lotions. These are referred to as oil-in-water emulsions or as water-in-oil depending on the ratios of the oil and water phases. We use reverse osmosis water to rehydrate our freeze-dried organic aloe leaf juice powder.

Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil:

this oil is an enigma — if one looks at the chemical structure it would appear to be a wax! Nature’s only liquid wax has some extraordinary properties, since it has the protective power of a wax but the light emollient and conditioning softness of oil. It is reported in literature to alleviate minor skin irritations and to be effective in the treatment of dry and sore skin. Jojoba is a good solvent for sebum and is used to control and complement this natural moisturizer.

Cetearyl alcohol:

a long-chain fatty alcohol derived from GMO-free coconuts. This multitasking ingredient works as carrier, emulsifying, thickening, surfactant and viscosity-reducing agent in cosmetic formulas. It has excellent emollient properties thus softens the skin. Permitted in organic cosmetics by organic certification agencies.

Xanthan gum:

produced by bacteria through fermentation of non-GMO corn. This polyssacharide is used in food and cosmetic products as a thickener and stabilizer. Chosen for its natural and GMO-free source as we do not use acrylic (petrochemical sourced) thickeners or part synthetic. Xantham gums provides stability to gels and emulsions.

Gluconolactone:

is a naturally-derived, usually produced by microorganism oxidation of glucose, vegan friendly (non-GMO) preservative with broad spectrum protection that improves skin´s moisture content and has an exceptional low toxicity profile, long history of use, is non-sensitizing and non-irritating. This polyhydroxy acid also provides antioxidant, anti-aging, antibacterial, chelating, deodorizing, skin-conditioning and sun-protective benefits.

Corylus avellana (hazelnut) oil:

contains vitamins, minerals and proteins; it is very easily absorbed, leaving no oily residue. The phospholipids in this oil give greater and longer-lasting moisturizing potential to cosmetic emulsions.

Glyceryl stearate:

DermOne´s glyceryl stearate is made from GMO-free vegetable sources. Produced by the esterification of glycerin and stearic acid. Functions as an emulsifier in creams and lotions with emollient (skin softening) properties. Permitted in food and by organic certification agencies in cosmetic products.

Prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil:

is beneficial for all skin types, especially dry skin conditions. Contains beneficial fatty acids, vitamins A, E and several B vitamins. It is a light, easily absorbed oil best known for its excellent emollient, soothing, softening, re-conditioning and nourishing properties.

Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter:

an effective emollient and smoother; has natural antioxidant properties as well as a small quantity of allantoin which is renowned for its healing qualities. It is also said to protect the skin against external aggressions and sunrays.

Mel (honey):

it is a potent natural moisturizer, emollient, protecting, antimicrobial, nourishing, rejuvenating and regenerative agent. DermOne uses organic honey as this ensures the bees have been kept well by good beekeeping methods and the honey will be free from chemicals used in conventional farming.

Aloe barbadensis leaf juice freeze-dried powder:

has the ability to effectively penetrate and transport healthy substances through the skin. Aloe Vera provides numerous cutaneous skin benefits such as acting as an excellent moisturizer, keeping the skin flexible and supplying oxygen to cells, as well as increasing the strength and synthesis of skin tissue, thus preventing premature aging. Rich in mucopolysaccharides (naturally occurring sugars that keep the skin moist and plump), minerals, amino acids and enzymes, aloe has renowned soothing, anti-inflammatory and healing properties, making it suitable for cuts, grazes, insect bites, sunburn, acne, dermatitis, sensitive and irritated skin.

Levulinic acid:

classified in EU under skin conditioning and perfuming, but also having strong antimicrobial properties. Produced through the modification of non-GMO corn sugars with heat and acid. It is an effective, non-toxic and non-sensitizing preservative. It has no cosmetic restrictions placed on it and is permitted to use in organic formulations by organic certification bodies.

Lecithin:

is derived from GM-free sunflower oil´s phosphatidylcholine. It’s primarily used for its emulsifying properties, but also to nourish, protect and soften (emollient) the skin’s surface. It serves as a base for creams and increases their spreadability. High in phospholipids and essential fatty acids, lysolecithin has a high affinity to skin and penetrates easily to nourish the skin’s cell membranes, keeping the skin supple. Its ability to form a film on the skin’s surface reduces water loss and aids skin hydration; it helps improve the appearance of enlarged pores. Its penetration-enhancing properties can be viewed negatively at times, because these could carry undesireable chemicals across the skin barrier. However, in an organic product this can be a positive property, because it helps essential nutrients reach deeper layers of the epidermis.

Sodium stearoyl lactylate:

produced from the combination of two common cosmetic ingredients: stearic acid and lactic acid. This ingredient functions very effectively as an emulsifier in our moisturisers requiring very low levels of use while also imparting humectant properties to the skin.

Tocopherol:

commonly known as vitamin E; DermOne uses a mix of tocopherols made from GMO-free sunflower oil. Provides antioxidant protection to oils thereby keeping a product fresh. Vitamin E is one of the oil soluble vitamins that has been used therapeutically for the treatment of numerous conditions such as sunburn, acne, rheumatic conditions, wound healing and pruritic (itching) skin conditions. It has also been shown to reduce scar forming tissue, helps prevent premature skin aging by blocking the lipid peroxidation responsible for cell membrane damage and also inhibits UV-induced erythema (skin redness). It is a potent free radical scavenger (antioxidant) and an excellent skin protectant.

Glycerin:

or glycerol, is released when an oil is hydrolysed, such as during soapmaking. A common cosmetic and food ingredient used as a natural humectant and moisturizer. Glycerin is one of the oldest and most respected skin moisturisers. It has been proven in many trials (both clinical and instrumental) to increase the moisture content of the skin and protect it from becoming dry and scaly. Glycerin is listed in all of the major pharmacopoeias and is used extensively for the treatment of the skin. Our glycerin is produced from GMO-free Karanja nut oil.

Propolis extract:

produced by bees as an antiseptic ‘glue’ in the hive. It is composed of resins, beeswax, pollen and minerals. Propolis has many beneficial properties for the skin including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, healing and antioxidant.

Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract:

chosen for its high antioxidant (preservative) properties alongside other skin benefits such as an anti-inflammatory, an antimicrobial and an antiseptic action. This certified organic extract is ideal for keeping formulas fresh and maintaining skin suppleness.

Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil:

pure enough to eat, this oil contains a rich blend of glycerides and fatty acids that moisturize and protect the skin. A light, lubricious oil that protects and preserves the dermis from moisture loss and helps to keep it soft and smooth.

Sodium benzoate:

is a synthetic preservative approved for use worldwide and is included on the European Union Cosmetics Directive “Positive List” (Europe has banned more than 1,200 ingredients due to safety concerns). It has also been approved by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare in both rinse-off and leave-in applications. Japan, like Europe, abide by the most stringent criteria in the world concerning what ingredients can be used in personal care products to also keep the product itself free from harmful contamination. Europe´s conform level with the safety data associated with this permitted preservative is clearly reassuring.

Sodium hydroxide:

produced by electrolysis of salt and water. Acts as a pH buffering agent in cosmetic products; it is added to maintain the correct acid/alkali level of a product. It comes in very low concentrations.

Sodium levulinate:

it is the sodium salt of levulinic acid, thus has similar properties. It is used as a EU approved preservative (inhibits microbial proliferation) and skin conditioning agent. It is derived from non GMO-corn.

Used to buy this when it was the SophytoPRO Pure Cleanser because it worked great at removing makeup and leaving my skin well conditioned to where I didn’t need to use a moisturizer afterwards. I’m kind of lazy using products, but love anything that has the ability to multitask. I love the new packaging and may even splash out and try the Dry Skin Rescue as I see that is for the body and face … woohoo! Vanessa Prioress, SC

  4. J Wilde, Santa Cruz, CA

Crazy creamy. My skin drinks this in. It removes makeup really well.

  5. Jamilla, CA

Very creamy with a light aroma of honey. Removes all of my makeup including waterproof mascara. Don’t need to moisturize after and it leaves skin very soft.

  6. Heather Fooks, Portland OR

I have very sensitive acne-prone skin and this cleanser has improved my skin so much. Follow directions and apply to dry skin, add water to face, and then use a damp warm cloth to fully remove. It’s like a spa experience every time I wash my face. It smells so good of natural honey. It reduces and heals any acne that pops up very quickly. It will make your skin feel super soft, and has healed some dry patches that nothing was fixing. It’s worth the price to me! Will continue purchasing!!

  7. Jeanette Yukon, OK

I have never tried a cleansing cream like this. It wasn’t too thick to apply, I would say it was silkier than thick and did a great job of removing all the makeup! I have normal to dry skin. No residue!

  8. Jilly, FL

I use this product as the first step in my double cleansing routine and I’m absolutely obsessed with it. It’s very gentle, doesn’t contain any nasty chemicals and the scent is lovely!

  9. Sue, Northumberland, PA

Soooo very moisturizing and erases any drop of makeup. Works sooooo well, I really love this.

  10. Trish, Spokane

Got this as a birthday present and oh my does it feel nice. It takes off every spot of makeup to the point I really don’t need to double cleanse, love it.

  11. Shakira, IN

I have combination skin with an oily T-zone and the occasional dry spots on my cheeks. My skin is also very sensitive, I have eczema and I am sensitive to scents. The first time I used this I thought to myself, I am sending it back. It was completely different than anything I have used before and it felt way too good to be actually cleaning my skin. I felt my face an hour or so later and couldn’t believe how smooth it felt. I immediately checked in the mirror because I was sure it was going to be an oily disaster, but it was beautiful. I have never been the one to have beautiful skin or get compliments. I started using this daily with a light moisturizer and I have never been happier with my skin. I would recommend this to anyone. Just follow the directions and you will not be disappointed! Oh, I almost forgot… the scent is incredibly light and natural.

  12. Robyn, Fresno

I definitely love this cleanser. It’s a gentle and thorough cleanse and makes my skin super soft and supple. I have extremely sensitive product skin and this did not break me out.

  13. Eloise W, St. Petersburg, FL

Very luxe, quality product. Leaves skin extremely smooth and soft.

  14. Ruth D, KY

My skin was showing fine lines which I suspected was due to dryness from an acne treatment from R&F. I started using this cleanser in the evenings and have seen an improvement in my skin’s moisture and texture. It also seems to help with redness. I really like this cleanser and will buy it again.

  15. Trace, NY

I have tried countless cleansers, lotions, scrubs, foams, any type of acne product to make the hormonal acne disappear, so you can imagine any product causes a spark of skepticism deep down. I almost didn’t buy this product but bought it anyway seeing the miracles that manuka honey performs. Let me tell you that this was one of the best investments I have ever made in my young adult life. I have been to dermatologists and wanted a more homeopathic approach to curing the problem. Look no further than this cleanser! I bought it with the Dual Action Serum and haven’t had a breakout since I’ve used it. I am so relieved to finally have found something THAT WORKS!!! I highly recommend and will buy again 100%

  16. Dawn JL, Denver

I have used a variety of different cleansers over the years, but don’t see myself buying anything else except this creamy honey cleanser from here on out. it has a super soothing scent, feels really rich, and breaks down dirt and makeup with ease. You only need a little bit of product for your whole face so I know this tube will last me a long time. It emulsifies beautifully when you add water, and after you dry off your face feels clean and hydrated. This product is the highlight of my nighttime skincare routine!

  17. Ella

What’s not to love? It’s everything you’d want in a dreamy creamy cleanser – and more!

  18. Pat

My skincare routine is just not the same without this cleanser. I buy 2 every 6 weeks because I also use it in the shower on my body. Can you think about making a bigger size? 🙂
